OMAHA (DTN) -- DTN retail fertilizer prices tracked by DTN continued to show the cost of most nutrients was higher than last month during the first week of June 2025.
For the fourth week in a row, prices for seven of the eight major fertilizers were higher compared to last month. The price of only one fertilizer saw a significant move, which DTN designates as anything 5% or more.
Leading the way higher once again was urea. The nitrogen fertilizer was up 7% from last month with an average price of $663 per ton.
Six other fertilizers had slightly higher prices. DAP had an average price of $802 per ton, MAP $832/ton, potash $475/ton, 10-34-0 $669/ton, UAN28 $419/ton and UAN32 $495/ton.
DAP was above the $800/ton price level for the first time since the third week of July 2023. That week, DAP had an average price of $807/ton.
The price of one fertilizer was down slightly from last month. Anhydrous had an average price of $776/ton.
On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was $0.72/lb.N, anhydrous $0.47/lb.N, UAN28 $0.75/lb.N and UAN32 $0.77/lb.N.
Every week when I write the weekly fertilizer column, I write the percentage change in prices for the eight major fertilizers from both a month and a year ago in my notebook. Then it is somewhat easy for me to go back through the weeks to find interesting things in our fertilizer data.
I started a new notebook on May 5, which is five weeks ago now. The first page of the notebook showed that prices for three fertilizers were lower than a year ago. The price of both MAP and anhydrous were down 1%, while the price of potash was 8% lower.
Five fertilizers were higher. DAP was up 1%, urea up 2%, 10-34-0 up 4%, UAN28 up 6% and UAN32 was 13% more expensive compared to last year.
Fast forward five weeks, and there have been big changes to nutrient prices during this time.
The prices for the second week of June showed that the price of only one fertilizer continues to be lower than one year ago, and that is the price of potash, which is down 7%. The prices for seven fertilizers are now higher compared to a year earlier: MAP is up 1%, both DAP and anhydrous are up 3%, and 10-34-0 is up 4%. The fertilizers with the largest price increases are UAN28, which is now 19% more expensive; UAN32, which is 22% higher; and urea, which is up 24%.
My knowledge of how the fertilizer industry works would say that demand is high this time of year and refill prices tend to be more expensive, which helps to explain higher fertilizer prices in recent weeks. Fertilizer analysts I talked to early last winter mentioned some of the possible global supply issues facing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizer; this, too, probably played a factor in the rise in prices in recent weeks.
It will be interesting to see what happens to fertilizer prices in the next five weeks as fertilizer applications wrap up. Will we see retail prices decline right away with less demand? Or will we see a period during which prices tend to gravitate to both sides of unchanged?
My guess is we will probably see the second scenario until more N and P supply is available to the world market. Stay tuned.
DTN gathers fertilizer price bids from agriculture retailers each week to compile the DTN Fertilizer Index. DTN first began reporting data in November 2008.
