Beef Industry Business Involvement: We have ranched in the Malta area for 41 years. Family members involved include Leo Sr., Mary Emily, Leo Jr., Chris, and Darla. The ranch business includes cow-calf pairs, replacement animals, forage production, horses, a small sheep flock, and custom combining grass seeds. Winner of Montana Environmental Stewardship Award and NCBA Regional Environmental Stewardship Award in 2004.
Beef Industry Leadership Involvement: President of Phillips County Livestock Association, 2004-2005
Non-Industry Leadership Involvement: Director of Hiline wool pool, President of Hiline wool pool (acting), President of Phillips County 4-H shooting sports for 5 years.
Family Facts: Wife Darla; three children: Anna, Eric, and Scott.
Major challenges facing the beef industry in the next 10 years: Adverse environmental legislation, competition from other protein sources, escalating health care costs and other budget items, consolidation of packing industry, and competition for grazing resources from large urban corporations.
